About us

Software that fits the way you work.

PB Labs Ltd was set up in Bristol in 2026 by James Proctor and Tom Billinghurst. Between us we've spent 50 years building the systems businesses actually run on: billing, scheduling and payroll for the private care sector, where a mistake means someone doesn't get paid and someone else doesn't get their visit.

Nearly all of that work was bespoke. We built systems around how a particular business ran, rather than asking the business to change to suit the software. That's still how we work now.

Today we're building our own apps. Pathfinder handles accounting workflow. Trailblazer keeps track of vehicle movements. There are more to come. They're built for small and medium-sized companies, and if one of them doesn't quite fit the way you do things, we can adapt it so it does.

We also made Vinyl Monkey, a mobile app for keeping track of your record collection. It started as something we wanted ourselves, and it turns out we weren't the only ones.

How we work

Understand the job first. Then build it.

We find out first

We'd rather spend an hour finding out how your business actually runs than guess. The systems we're proudest of are the ones where we understood the job properly before writing a line of code, so that's where we always start.

We keep it simple

If a feature isn't going to get used, it's not going in. Software that tries to do everything usually ends up being awkward at all of it, and you shouldn't need a training day to get through a normal Tuesday.

You talk to us

Because there are two of us, there's no support desk between you and the people who built the thing. If something's wrong, or you want it to work differently, you'll be talking to James or Tom.

Who we are

James and Tom.

Tom Billinghurst

Tom Billinghurst started out as a software tester and worked his way up to Director. He's spent his career finding the ways systems fail before customers do, and he still does.

James Proctor

James Proctor led development teams before going out on his own as a contractor. He's the one who turns what a business needs into something that works, and keeps working.
